Background:
In 2001 the Distinguished Service to Forestry Award was renamed the Laurence C. Walker Distinguished Service to Forestry Award in honor of the late Dr. Laurence C. Walker. Dr. Walker served as the first dean of the School of Forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University, in the heart of the forests of East Texas. He was also a forestry historian and the author of numerous books including The Southern Forest; Excelsior: Memoir of a Forester; The North American Forests, and Forests: A Naturalist’s Guide to Trees and Forest Ecology to name a few. Award details and Eligibility:
The Laurence C. Walker Distinguished Service to Forestry Award is handed out each year at the Texas Society of American Forester’s annual meeting. Nominations for this prestigious award are due into the TSAF Professional Recognition Chair on or before March 1st of each year and can only be made by current SAF members. Eligible candidates are limited to SAF members who have demonstrated the following:
- Evidence of continuing service and leadership in the Society of American Forester’s, including work in Chapters, State Society, and special projects.
- Professional achievement in the field of forestry.
- Service to local or regional community, including activities in church and civic organizations.

Background:
The Forestry Leadership Award was established in 1972 and James B. Hull, the current Director of the Texas Forest Service, was its first recipient. The purpose of this award is to recognize a young forestry professional who has demonstrated leadership in areas such as school, SAF student chapter, SAF chapter, State Society, SAF National, church, civic organizations, community and his/her professional position.
Award details and Eligibility:
The Forestry Leadership Award is handed out each year at the Texas Society of American Forester’s annual meeting. Nominations for this award are due into the TSAF Professional Recognition Chair on or before March 1st of each year and can only be made by current SAF members. Eligible candidates must not have passed his/her 35th birthday as of March 1st. This award is limited to SAF members who have demonstrated Evidence of leadership in areas such as school, SAF student chapter, SAF chapter, State Society, SAF National, church, civic organizations, special community projects and in his/her professional position.
